The Symbian mobile operating system is the world's most widely used smartphone platform. On Thursday, the Nokia-backed organization that controls the code took a step to further increase its popularity. The Symbian Foundation said its Symbian OS is now fully open source and open to contributions from developers around the world. As open source software, Symbian can now be used or modified by developers "for any purpose," the Foundation said, "whether that be for a mobile device or for something else entirely."

"The development community is now empowered to shape the future of the mobile industry, and rapid innovation on a global scale will be the result," said Symbian Foundation director Lee Williams, in a statement.

Nokia bought out Symbian for about $410 million in 2008 with an eye to bringing the OS into the open source community. Symbian gives phone manufacturers an alternative to commercial mobile operating systems such as Microsoft's Windows Mobile. Symbian held about 47% of the worldwide smartphone OS market last year. Research in Motion's Blackberry was second, with a 20% stake, and Windows Mobile third with 12.4% of the market.

All 108 packages containing the source code of the Symbian platform can now be downloaded from Symbian’s developer web site (tiny.symbian.org/open), under the terms of the Eclipse Public License and other open source licenses. Also available for download are the complete development kits for creating applications (the Symbian Developer Kit) and mobile devices (the Product Development Kit). These kits are compatible with Symbian^3, the very latest version of the platform, which is now fully open source and will be "feature complete" during Q1 of this year.

Google Apps become more IT-friendly today with the addition of new security features for iPhone, Nokia, and Windows Mobile users. The new features allow administrators to enforce password requirements and remotely wipe data from mobile devices.

"With this change, Google Apps Premier and Education Edition administrators will be able to manage their users' iPhone, Nokia E series, and Windows Mobile devices right from the Google Apps administrative control panel, without deploying any additional software or having to manage dedicated enterprise mobile servers," wrote Bryan Mawhinney, a Google software engineer, in an announcement posted Wednesday on the company's Enterprise Blog.

These new mobile device management capabilities will allow administrators to:

Remotely wipe all data from lost or stolen mobile devices

Lock idle devices after a period of inactivity

Require a device password on each phone

Set minimum lengths for more secure passwords

Require passwords to include letters, numbers and punctuation

These features will be accessible from the 'Mobile' tab under 'Service Settings' in the Google Apps control panel. Once a user starts syncing their devices with Google Apps, the domain administrator will be able to remotely wipe device data, right from the user settings page. These policies will let employees access their data from their phone while helping IT administrators easily control access to corporate data on mobile devices.

The 3D experience is one step closer to "invading" your personal home space. Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd announced that it has become the first company to commence mass production of panels for 3D LED TVs and 3D LCD TVs.

“Samsung Electronics aims to lead the global 3D TV panel market in pioneering panel mass production for 3D LED and LCD TVs” said Wonkie Chang, president of the LCD Business at Samsung Electronics.

The company began producing LED and LCD compatible panels for 40-inch, 46-inch and 55-inch full-HD 3D TVs using ‘3D Active Glasses’ this month, employing Samsung’s exclusive true 240Hz technology. Samsung’s true 240Hz technology delivers full-HD viewing in 2D, and also smooth, natural, full-HD 3D images that can vividly capture rapid movements. Operating at 240 frames per second, Samsung’s panels deliver a more lifelike picture with alternating left and right eye images through the use of 3D Active Glasses technology.

Samsung’s new 3D Active Glasses technology first blocks the left and then right lens, causing a momentary lag when images are shown to each eye to achieve more lifelike 3D images. The term, 3D Active Glasses, was selected as an official term by the Glasses Standardization Working Group of the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) earlier this year. The polarized glass method previously used in 3D glasses produced separate images for the left and right eyes, resulting in half the resolution of two-dimensional pictures as only half of the screen can be viewed through each polarized filter. Brightness was also lowered because of the polarized filter.

According to DisplaySearch, a market research firm, the 3D display market is expected to grow from $902 million in 2008 to $22 billion in 2018. Specifically, the 3D TV market is expected to expand to a $17-billion market, with sales increasing from 200,000 units in 2009 to 64 million units 2018. You've probably even hopped to have one. You've maybe prayed the rumors were true. Well people, it seems they were. Motorola confirmed that they are working with Google on a new phone to be sold directly to consumers.

No one knows yet it the phone is question is the one that the concept pictures showed, but it is certain that the new phone will have the Android operating system and since Motorola and Google are working together on this one, the nickname of Nexus Two that has been given to the not yet released handset (also known as Motorola Shadow), is very appropriate. This phone might even be a crossover between a Nexus and the very popular Motorola Droid.

We'll just have to wait and see what will they finally come out with and until then we might even try to soften or completely obliterate the Apple iPad hype that's been going around lately. A few years ago the iPhone pretty much got the same kind of attention the new iPad tablet from Apple is getting these days. And the way the iPhone started a sensitive touchscreen trend, it highly possible that we are witnessing the start of a new one: the tablet frenzy. Even though tablets have been around for a very long time, and some designs are really great, it seams that people needed Apple to give the OK for everyone to say: "Yes man, tablets are great! Everyone should have one!". This is stupid.

Anyway, if you need more info related to the new Apple iPad tablet, and not all of the opinions will be positive (some will even be realistic), check out the links below:

This one looks a lot better

And that all it's worth mentioning about it. We'll just have to wait and see how many people will encounter problems with this tablet and how well will it rate against other tablets, like the HP Pavilion tx2500z or the Lenovo ThinkPad X200 tablet. But who cares, as long as it's from Apple, right?
Apple Insider posted today a great review regarding the new Apple 27" big screen iMac. The full review can be found here.

Some of the key features for the new model is the fact that iMac comes standard with a wireless keyboard and the new Magic Mouse. Of course there are a lot more, like the fact that the 27" display is equipped with LED backlighting, to push more light through the pixels to achieve the best picture possible. The new 21.5" iMac features 1920-by-1080 HD resolution and the 27" model has a 2560-by-1440 resolution. That’s 78 percent more pixels than the 21.5-inch iMac.

A seamless, precision-forged enclosure makes the back one continuous aluminum surface. And there’s only one cord: the power cord. The wider iMac display allows more room to separate the two hottest components, the CPU and the GPU. This keeps things cool inside the iMac enclosure. Apple engineers also implemented an intelligent control system that monitors temperatures and delivers just the right amount of airflow to critical components.
And the classical photo album is almost obsolete in these high tech days we're living. These days if you want to view your vacation or wedding photos you would get a digital photo frame that's capable to store all of them in one small place and you can view them on a sleek and small LCD screen or you can leave them play as a slide show.

HP's DreamScreen 130 is one of those cool digital lcd photo frames that has a lot more features packed in it's small box Some of those features, aside from storing and displaying photos, are: Internet radio, Facebook updates, music and photo streaming from a PC, a calendar and a built-in alarm clock. All in all HP DreamScreen 130 is a sleek stand-alone "smart screen" you can place on your kitchen counter or take from room to room because it even works with your existing home wireless network.

The DreamScreen 130 digital photo frame gives you the possibility to easily access content on your PCs and the Web via a simple menu, enjoy music, photos, and videos with HP MediaSmart software, control entertainment via an intuitive handheld remote control. For even more usability you can turn it to landscape or portrait orientation with the included stand.

If you are on Facebook, and a lot of people certainly are, with DreamScreen 130 you have easy access to your account so you can view and stay current on Facebook. You can also view slide shows of photos uploaded to Snapfish, stream music and photos from your PC, listen to Internet radio from Pandora or HP SmartRadio and stay organized with the calendar and be on time with the built-in alarm clock

The design of the DreamScreen 130 digital picture frame is pleasing and elegant, complementing your home decor. The speakers are concealed and offer a superb sound quality. If you need to, you can mount the lcd screen on a wall, because holes have been pre-drilled on the back.

For touchscreen capabilities is equipped with capacitive touch navigation buttons. Unlike the more classical 7 inch digital photo frame, the HP's DreamScreen 130 has a 13.3" wide screen display, with a 16:9 aspect ratio and 800x480px screen resolution. It's equipped with built-in Line Out for headphones or external speakers and 10/100 LAN & wireless 802.11 b/g for networking. It has 2 USB ports and a 6-in-2 Card Reader for your data transfer needs. If you still haven't heard about them, I suggest you visit the natural user interface wiki on Wikipedia. These concepts are meant to improve the way we use technology or the way we interact with it. Lately we have seen that Microsoft has been more involved in social media environments and in the way users receive theyr products. It's not that crispy office company anymore. Or at least that's the way they want to appear.

The natural user interface Microsoft is developing is meant to improve the user interaction with the computer. Craig Mundie, Microsoft’s chief research and strategy officer, discusses how science and information technology can help solve the world’s biggest problems. In his presentations to college students Mundi uses text, voice but also hand gestures to manipulate the data on the screen. The most interesting thing though is the eye tracking, where you skim you eyes over the page in a very natural way.

Dont think that only big corporations have a part of all this hype. There are a lot more people passionate about such things. In fact there are even natural user interface groups out there. NUI Group, which actually is an acronym for Natural User Interface Group, is just one of them. You can check out their website at www.nuigroup.com. They have some really nice videos about the concepts that they created or tested.

Also in the commercial area there are several companies that provide customers multi-touch solutions, but mostly in the advertisement business. One company that deals with natural user interface in Europe is NUITEQ. Natural User Interface Technologies AB (NUITEQ) is a Swedish innovative technology company with its main focus on delivering commercial advanced multi-touch software solutions, to the global market. Additional services include multi-touch hardware solutions.

For all of these cool natural user interface devices you would of course need the top of the line technology or you would have to build it yourself, if you have the skills. But all of it is still in concept phase, which means it may never be created the way it is presented, it might not be cost-effective or another cool thing will come out in the meantime. One thing still bugs me about those transparent glass displays though. Won't they get all smeared from hand fat and fingerprints? Do you always have to clean them?Stelian Andreihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04556332190414550194noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-379540989265686296.post-489635753455668122009-08-06T02:25:00.000-05:002009-08-06T02:25:50.716-05:00Sony Ericsson C903 Cyber-Shot mobile phone
The Sony Ericsson C903 Cyber-shot™ mobile phone is primarily made for taking memorable pictures – just slide down the protective lens cover and shoot! Continuing our showcase of great LCD computer monitors, we have come to present the Samsung F2080 20 inch LCD monitor.

The Samsung F2080 20" 16:9 widescreen LCD displays feature cPVA technology, for accurate image performance and professional-caliber color. This is one of those Samsung LCD monitors with 100% support of sRGB color mode, the recommended color space for the internet, and the default color space for many computers, digital cameras and scanners, and 178º viewing angles. This ensures a smooth and accurate color to everyone gathered around the screen. Or just to you, if you prefer watching the screen from a very awkward angle. The innovative cPVA technology features a liquid-crystal cell structure that minimizes light leakage for brilliant, accurate color and enables wide viewing angles and high contrast ratios.

Speaking of high contrast ratios, the high 3,000:1 static contrast ratio provides subtle transitions in shadows, and details in the whites and blacks. The 2.5 mm bezel-to-screen depth and the 15 mm ultra-narrow bezel combine to give you an even, virtually seamless display area when tiling multiple displays. Also the Tilt/Swivel/Pivot/130 mm height-adjustable stands also add comfort.

Ion propulsion systems can be used for geosynchronous satellite propulsion systems and deep space missions providing significant advantages over traditional chemical propulsion systems due to the higher fuel efficiency.

Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) and NEC have jointly developed a low power "Microwave Ion Engine" that uses microwaves for ion generation, enabling long life and high mission reliability. NEC's Microwave Ion Engine is currently flying on JAXA's HAYABUSA asteroid rendezvous and study mission, and has proven to be robust and reliable, with more than 30,000 hours of in-space operation.

Aerojet's electric propulsion products are currently flying on more than 150 operational satellites and span a broad range of electric propulsion products. Dr. Roger Myers, general manager of Aerojet's Redmond operations, states that "the low power Microwave Ion Engine from NEC provides an excellent complement to Aerojet's broad electric propulsion product offerings."

"Aerojet is a leading supplier of satellite propulsion systems in the United States and has broad experience and technical capabilities with satellite propulsion systems," said Kunio Kondo, senior general manager, Aerospace and Defense Operations Unit, NEC Corporation. "Collaborating with Aerojet will help NEC to expand its low power Microwave Ion Engine business in the U. S. market."

The fourth handset of the Black Label Series has a distinctive 4.0-inch wide screen high-definition LCD with an 800x345 pixel resolution for a superb viewing quality. The wide screen breaks away from conventional screen designs with a 21:9 aspect ratio for a panoramic, cinema-like quality and optimal mobile computing experience. With the enlarged screen, users will experience a surprisingly convenient and efficient mobile environment.

Browsing the Internet with 800 pixels wide at one’s disposal is quite easy, there is no need to scroll horizontally to read entire web pages. The 4.0-inch display also features a Dual Screen UI that can efficiently display two different types of content simultaneously. The wide HD LCD “Real VGA” screen provides a full range of natural colors for displayed images, making photos more crisp, videos more true-to-life, games more dynamic and documents more readable.

“The initial response to the new LG Chocolate phone has exceeded our expectations by a wide margin,” said Dr. Skott Ahn, CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications. “Although much interest seems focused on the striking shape of the handset, the real surprise will be when people discover the advantages of the 4.0-inch screen in terms of viewing pleasure and ease of use.”

The new LG Chocolate’s wide screen is overlaid with curved tempered glass and is seamlessly encased in a glossy black finish and iconic red highlights. Although the screen may be much wider, the new LG Chocolate makes an incredibly slim and chic style statement that was also inherent in the original Chocolate.

Aside from the great large 4" screen that is very emphasized in the official press release, some of the other features that the new LC Chocolate BL40 include the 5.0 Megapixel camera, Flash-based 3D interface, multitouch, AGPS, WiFi, 7.2Mbps HSDPA and the tempered glass screen surface is apparently scratch-proof. Even so, the thin dimensions of the handset make it impossible to believe that all those things could possibly fit in there.

The new LG Chocolate will be available beginning Q3 in 54 countries. More information is available at www.lgmobile.com.
Stelian Andreihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04556332190414550194noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-379540989265686296.post-17337661858874006492009-07-30T02:44:00.000-05:002009-07-30T02:48:04.188-05:00Samsung R522-52S notebook PC-2.1 GHz
This beautiful notebook is the Samsung R522 R-Series notebook computer features a 16:9 widescreen, so your widescreen movies will completely fill the screen. Movies and images will be sharp and clear with the 15.6" high definition 1366 x 768 LCD screen. Thanks to an LED backlight, the R522 LCD display delivers bright and beautiful colors. HD SRS audio is rich and clear. Performance is fast and powerful too, with a state-of-the-art Intel® Core 2 Duo processor and 250 GB hard drive. And a built-in 1.3 MP web camera makes video chatting / conferencing easy.

It features a shiny blue-rimmed touch pad which boasts an alluring blue light and the smooth rectangular-shaped isolation design gives you an attractive first impression. I also has a 3-in-1 memory card reader and 4 x USB 2.0 ports, so you can seamlessly move data from your digital camera, camcorder, MP3 player or PDA straight to the notebook.

The hard drive disk is a voluminous 250 GB. The R522 features state-of-the-art Intel Centrino 2 processor technology, delivering unrivaled system performance with enhanced energy efficiency and advanced wireless connectivity to keep you working longer. With a standard 6 cell battery, you can surf the web for up to 5 hours on a single battery charge.

The brilliant LED-backlit display offers up to 30 percent more viewing area than traditional screens in an incredible 300 nits of brightness. Using LED technology means screens are thinner, brighter, more durable and power efficient. You can also enjoy photo-like image quality, greater viewing angles and better text legibility, reducing eye strain and boosting productivity.

One thing I noticed and left me baffled is the fact that the Samsung R522-52S notebook has no Bluetooth capability. I find it impossible these days, when more and more electronics producers aim to create total wireless products, that a notebook, which its entire design idea is based on portability and mobility, lacks suck a thing.

One thing that put a smile on my face though is the fact that the oh so old and obsolete RJ11 Modem is not in there anymore. This king of connection has been overused for so long I thought it will never go away.

With 100% support of sRGB color mode and 178º viewing angles, the color will be smooth and accurate to everyone gathered around your screen. High 3,000:1 static contrast ratio provides subtle transitions in shadows and details in the whites and blacks. The 2.5 mm bezel-to-screen depth and the 15 mm ultra-narrow bezel combine to give you an even, virtually seamless display area when tiling multiple displays. And the Tilt / Swivel / Pivot / 130 mm height-adjustable stands add comfort, while the F2380 offers 1920 x 1080 resolution.

Innovative cPVA technology features a liquid-crystal cell structure that minimizes light leakage for brilliant, accurate color and enables wide viewing angles and high contrast ratios. A high 3,000:1 static contrast ratio adds incredible depth, with subtle shadow transitions and incredible detail, even in the whites and blacks.

Wide 178º viewing angles mean accurate color from every angle and the Tilt / Swivel / Pivot stand along with 130 mm height adjustments add comfort. A 2.5 mm bezel-to-screen depth and 15 mm bezel combine to provide a flat, virtually seamless image area when tiling monitors.

Although the release date has not yet been announced, this game promises a lot of great action and above all, a really massive action game. The 256 players online the developers aimed to achieve create a realistic battle scene of a futuristic war.

"If you're talking sheer chaos, in terms of, if you drop 256 players into a village square like an arena, that's going to be unmitigated," says creative director Ed Byrne. "So what we wanted to do is build that intensity and use that flow to direct players from small encounters to larger, and to basically make sure that squads link up actually more like a realistic military operation."

Orchestrating battles on this scale involves a light touch, he explains. You need to direct the fight through careful level design, but also leave players freedom to spread out. "It's through level design and through the flow from beginning to end of the map as you go through the objectives that we mitigate the chaos. The other [method] is simply allowing players to have some freedom on where to go, so if a player is basically overwhelmed by the amount of combat that he's seeing, he can not only retreat backwards but he can go laterally and join the areas that are happening on either side of him."

It isn’t yet available as a pre-built package, but you can download and install a development snapshot of PHP 6 now to check out the new features and verify your scripts remain functional. Since it removes some backwards-compatibility features you should test your existing code thoroughly.

To compile, install, and run PHP 6, you must have the GNU make utility, a compiler such as gcc, some additional libraries to power new PHP features, and a Web server. Compiling and installing PHP 6 requires:

Apache with development headers, such as apache-prefork-dev. The threaded MPM version of Apache is not recommended for use by the PHP group for production use.

An International Component for Unicode (ICU) library, like libicu-dev

The XML2 development headers, libxml2-dev

Since PHP 6 removes some backwards compatibility features, your main concern is to make sure that your PHP scripts are up to date before upgrading your system. Following the tips in this section—like discontinuing the use of register_globals and magic_quotes—will not only help you get ready for PHP 6 but will also help you to make your code more secure.

In PHP versions prior to version 6, the register_globals setting allowed you to register “EGPCS” (Environment, GET, POST, Cookie, and Server) variables as global variables. For many reasons, using register_globals is a poor security practice that could lead to cross-site scripting holes. An attacker could populate a variable using a query string parameter (GET) where your script was originally looking for cookie values or POST variables. As a developer, you should be sure where your variables are coming from, whether it’s from a GET or POST method or from a cookie. As of PHP 5.3.0, the register_globals feature is deprecated, and as of PHP 6 it is completely removed.

PHP 6 offers Unicode support for Unicode characters in input, output, processing files, and for PHP scripts themselves. The most common of the Unicode encodings is UTF-8, which is the default encoding for many of the PHP 6 functions.

In addition to function changes, PHP 6 will not support compatibility for the PHP 4 object model. If you have objects in your PHP code, make sure they’re PHP 5 objects. The PHP 4 object model compatibility was only available after 5.0.0 and was removed in PHP 5.3.0, so any object that works in 5.3 later versions will work fine in PHP 6.

More information about installing and configuring the yet not officially released version of PHP 6 you can visit the following link: Get ready for PHP 6 on linux-mag.com.Stelian Andreihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04556332190414550194noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-379540989265686296.post-19799050078726802822009-03-17T14:16:00.000-05:002009-07-22T07:29:58.875-05:00Samsung TL100 - 12MP digital camera
Back again, with yet another product from Samsung, the TL100 digital camera, there haven't been too many around here on Tresh IT News. In fact, I believe this is the very best.

One of the most characteristics of this digital camera is of course the 12 MP (mega pixel). If you ask me, that's a little too much for a hobby camera and judging from the looks of it, it's more like a tourist's accessory. It's great if you want to take some pictures of you and the family on the holidays, but a 6 MP or 8 MP camera should work just fine for that. In my opinion, cameras above 8 MP should only be seen as professional, with all the options they should have. Let's face it, this doesn't have nearly as many options a professional photographer or even a quasi-professional photographer would want. But let's see what else it offers.

Specifications

Image sensor Type: 1/2.33″ CCD

Another down side to this camera is the small 3x optical zoom. The digital zoom just doesn't do it unless you hold the camera perfectly still, even with the DIS (Digital Image Stabilization). And that's a little troublesome. But anyway, it's small, compact, great for holidays and it also comes in red.
If you are interested in getting the latest features of this great software, here's a small list that is meant to ignite your appetite. The full article can be found here, along with screen shots and a lot more details. The download links as well, of course.

Genius Playlists - Play a song, click the Genius button, and iTunes creates a playlist of other songs from your library that go great together. Genius playlists help you discover songs in your library you never knew you had — and rediscover forgotten favorites.

Genius Sidebar - As you select songs in your library, the Genius sidebar displays songs from the iTunes Store that go great with it. The Genius sidebar won’t recommend songs already in your library, and you can preview and buy recommended songs directly from the sidebar.

High-quality, DRM-free music. iTunes Plus is the new standard on iTunes. - you can choose from millions of iTunes Plus songs from all four major music labels and thousands of independents. With iTunes Plus, you get high-quality, 256-Kbps AAC encoding. All free of burn limits and digital rights management (DRM). So iTunes Plus music will play on iPod, Apple TV, all Mac and Windows computers, and many other digital music players. It’s also easy to upgrade your iTunes library to iTunes Plus. You don’t have to buy the song or album again. Just pay the 30¢ per song upgrade price. (Music video upgrades are 60¢ and entire albums can be upgraded for 30 percent of the album price.)

HD TV Shows - Purchase select episodes of your favorite TV shows in high definition for just $2.99. Or get the whole season in HD with a Season Pass. And when you buy HD, iTunes doubles your viewing pleasure: You also get an iPod-ready version with a file size and resolution that's ideal for smaller screens.

Enhanced Accessibility - Tunes 8 is now screen reader friendly on both Mac and PC. Manage your iTunes library using VoiceOver in Mac OS X Leopard or Window-Eyes for Windows XP and Windows Vista. Or use your screen reader to purchase or download content from the iTunes Store - including iTunes U.

The phone was developed to satisfy the refined tastes of trendsetters who desire a sophisticated design with an enduring elegance.

"The huge success of the previous models of the Black Label Series validated our approach to provide the ultimate mobile experience for today’s discerning consumers, who seek to embody personal style with their handsets," says Skott Ahn, President & CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. "These are the enriched features that will diversify the way users interact with their handsets but most of all, the LG Secret was designed to be a style that lasts."

From the top we can see a predominant keyword in the LG press release: timeless. And in my opinion, in this high-speed modern age of ours, it's one of the most necessary things to keep us all on track. Of course, saying that, LG defines the terms on which this word applies:

Timeless style - LG Secret will always look new thanks to the materials incorporated into the phone

Timeless memories - Equipped with an advanced 5.0 megapixel camera built into the slimmest profile of any camera handset on the market (at 11.8mm), LG Secret boasts 120 fps video and DivX® certified playback

Timeless entertainment - Entertainment features include Touch Media that takes advantage of the touch screen to directly access five multimedia functions in a single button – music, photos, games, documents, and FM radio

Timeless convenience - LG Secret makes life easier with Bluetooth auto-sync that automatically synchronizes with the PC and users do not have to be hassled by tangled USB cables. The Auto Rotating Display shifts the image on the screen for viewing in any position

These and many other features, which are described in more detail in the original press release, make this phone proud to be one of the Black Label Series. LG Secret begins its launch in Europe followed by launch events in Asia, South America, and on to the rest of the world.
